PADI, Project AWARE

International Beach Clean Up Day

17th September 2005

Every year PADI's Project Aware team, stage an” International Beach Clean Up Day”. Divers and non-divers alike, congregate to collect and dispose of safely, as much rubbish as they can gather. This year was no exception, and Scubaholics set their sights on the rather neglected western end of El Morche beach.

With the help of the Deputy Mayor of Torrox and the Conserje de Playas, we were provided with a large skip, to help us with our task. At 2 pm on Saturday the 17 th Sept. Nineteen members, divers and some non-divers, proceeded to clear the beach. When we first started everyone thought we would never find enough rubbish to fill the skip.

Four hours later, exhausted wet and dirty, the skip was full to overflowing. As well as the usual bottles, cans and plastic of all description, we also found clothes furniture, car parts, windows and doors, wheels, wire, and miles of plastic string from the greenhouses. One of the largest finds was the dumped plastic sheeting from the old greenhouses themselves, which is supposed to be collected and disposed of by the suppliers. All in all, a great effort and we estimated that we removed in excess of two tons of rubbish.

It was hard work, but everyone joined in with great enthusiasm, and although it wasn't their beach, divers and friends from as far away as Canada, Germany, Scotland joined in to help. We all enjoyed a well-earned Bar-B-Q and a cold beer afterwards (well, you have to).

ScubaDoo would like to thank all who took part in this, our 3 rd Clean Up Day. Also to those who also, during their weekly dives, help to keep our local environment clean.
