RocK On

It was time for a change of venue, and as there are no wrecks in this area (except me, before anyone else says it), we thought that Gibraltar has plenty of wrecks, so lets investigate. Once all the paperwork was sorted out we decided that an early start was required for our day trip. All the kit was packed the night before and a 08:00 leave time from Scubadoo seemed reasonable. Unfortunately “Café Apetito” next door was not open for our usual morning coffees, but undeterred we left on time.

We got us a convoy, sixteen people in four cars, quiet roads and the thought of some inviting wrecks, brought us to Gibraltar by 10:15. With all the papers in order we were through customs and diving just after 11:00.

The site we visited was Camp Bay, which has a number of wrecks in easy reach. The first dive was on three barges in 14 metres of water. These were full of life and considering we were in the Atlantic, it was similar to here. Octopuses were everywhere, which indicates success with the no spear fishing policy. The types of sea fans and soft corals were slightly different to those found here and the larger fish seemed less wary of divers.
The second dive was on the wreck of an old cable layer, again full of life, particularly congers. With water temperature only slightly colder than here and good visibility, we had two superb dives each.

These wrecks were sunk specifically for divers and to act as breeding grounds for all manner of life and they have been very successfully inhabited. All in all a superb days diving and we have many more wrecks to investigate in future. The overall verdict was “when do we go again”

Maybe next month,
